It is said that Mother Nature has an answer for everything, and soapnuts are the answer for those wanting to move away from 'chemical washes'. Soapnuts are not actually nuts as their name suggests. They are in-fact the fruit, or drupe, of the sapindus tree found in warmer climes. The soap producing properties of this amazing fruit have been known for centuries and has traditionally been used for everything from cleaning fruit to washing hair. Given the pressures placed on our water supplies and the harm that we do our oceans by using chemical laden powders it is only right that we should now discover the benefits of the soapnut.
From a renewable source, (remember fruits keep coming) the soapnut is suitable for both hand and machine washes. They will leave your clothes soft and clean with none of the usual itchy scratchy annoyance that often occurs when you change your washing powder. Each bag comes with an instruction card and two small drawstring bags for use in your machine. Go on, give them a go. The benefits speak for themselves when you start to notice how much less you are spending on washing powders.
Whiter washes. -- Soapnuts do not contain optical whiteners, a trick often used to make whites appear whiter than they actually are. Try adding some bi-carb of soda to your wash, a couple of tea spoons should do it.
Heavy soiled loads -- Soda Crystals, cheap and effective addition to the load. A scoop in your wash will add power to the soapnuts.
Conditioner -- Soapnuts have a natural softening quality leaving clothes fresh and soft. If you want to add a scent to your wash then try putting a few drops of your favorite essential oil where you would normally put the conditioner. Easy! Jasmine oil is a luxurious addition when washing your bed sheets, or try the natural anti bacterial properties of eucalyptus to ensure the your gym wear stays fresher for longer.
Try them, amaze your friends with them, experiment with them. Just remember to compost them when you are finished, their nutrients are good for soil too!.
